Music is an imitation of life. This course will guide students through the lives of the great composers in the Baroque Era. Biographical profiles of composers from each era will be discussed. Each profile will go beyond describing their life and creative output, to exploring their work in a broader historical and cultural context. Classes will be supplemented with recordings of the great composers’ works in a chronological sequence paralleling the each composer’s life.

This course requires a study commitment of approximately 2 hours per week.


  • Gain exposure to various music styles and forms of the Baroque period through the analysis of music recordings

  • Explore the development of the Opera, the Fugue, and the Baroque Sonata

  • Study the composers and identify their musical style and influence

  • Understand the progression of music from a historical and social perspective

  • Develop an understanding and recognize the role music played in the Baroque Era 

  • Develop a greater appreciation of music

  • Complete weekly pre-recorded lectures

  • Participate in interactive online student forums

  • Deliver assessments and/or assignments in a timely manner


  • There are no prerequisites for this course.

  • Recommended age: 12 years old and above.

Ms. Seray’s musical career spans twenty years with formal education in classical violin performance, music theory and aural studies from the Manhattan School of Music. She has completed all musical education board exams in both New York and Australia, and was a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. She has and continues to perform in international orchestra competitions, regional orchestras, chamber groups, theatrical performances, private and corporate functions.
